Perched
high upon a cliff that plunges down into the
Gulf
of Naples
lies the famous little town of
Sorrento.
The town of orange trees, tarantella
dance and of course the song “Torna a
Surriento” (come back to Sorrento) which is known
all over the world. With the
beautiful view over the Gulf of Naples and the scent of orange blossom in
the air, it is the perfect spot for romance,
especially on a warm summer evening.
It is also the perfect town for
excursions, as busses and tours go to all the
important places such as Amalfi, Ravello and
Positano along the Amalfitan coast and to the
archeological site of Pompei
where the volcano
Vesuvius that buried the town in
79 a.d.
with its tremendous outburst still stands
threatening nearby. Now
visitors can walk along the streets and into the
houses of this ancient Roman town, there are
also tours that take you to the top of the
volcano.
The isle of
Capri is also easily reached
from Sorrento, the
boats go often,
every day
to and from.
Even
though it has been a great tourist town for many
years, Sorrento
has not lost its genuine
atmosphere with the everyday life of its
inhabitants.
Not far from the main square Piazza Tasso,
lies the Convent of St. Francis of
Assisi. It is a complex consisting
of the beautiful white baroque structured
church from the 14th century. A monastery
from the 8th century and the lovely Cloister
gardens where all the civil marriages take
place.
All placed with the view over the Gulf of
Naples with Vesuvius and the isle of Capri.
