Ponza is the largest of the Pontine islands, a small arcipelago  that lie outside the coast of  Anzio/Terracina, southwest of Rome, in the province of Latina of the region of Lazio.   It is easily reached with the many boats that go from  Naples, Anzio, Terracina or Formia.  The island has an area of 7.5 sq.km and approximately 3.000 inhabitants. Dwellings have been found from as far back as 312 B.C.   The island was once a penalty colony for banished Christians in the days of the Roman Empire but later on it was transformed into a popular location for summer residences.

With its clear waters and many underwater caves  it is the perfect place for snorkeling.   

There are several diving schools, scuba diving and boat rental offers.   In the main part of the town you will find many trattorias, cafès and fine restaurants.  The menus consist mainly of a variety of fresh fish and crustaceous, delicious  pasta dishes and good wines.   There are many hotels in all categories and also many apartments to rent for a week, where you then are able to cook your own meal when you feel that you just want to sit by yourselves on your own terrace and watch the sunset over the sea.

In the center of the village lies the pretty Catholic church and also a small Town Hall where weddings can take place.
